An educational route exploring farms, orchids, rural traditions and biodiversity.
The Farms and Orchids Tour is a 21 km circular route starting and finishing in Sarsina, designed for those who wish to explore the natural beauty of the Romagna Apennines at a leisurely pace, surrounded by green landscapes, farming traditions and small villages.
Thanks to its mixed terrain, numerous opportunities to stop and the services available along the route, this itinerary is particularly suitable for families with children, as well as gravel cyclists, mountain bikers and e-bike riders.
Leaving the centre of Sarsina, the route enters the Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance (SCI), an area of outstanding natural value where biodiversity takes centre stage. In spring, between May and June, the meadows burst into colour with numerous species of wild orchids, making this section particularly appealing to botany enthusiasts and nature photographers. It is a stretch that invites visitors to stop, observe and appreciate the shapes and colours of a natural environment protected at European level.
The road, mostly unpaved and surrounded by greenery, leads to the Monte Finocchio Pass (also known as Passo della Musella), which connects the Savio and Borello valleys. This panoramic viewpoint between Sarsina and Ranchio offers sweeping views of the Apennine ridges. Here you will find Il Trifoglio Farm, an agricultural business known for producing honey, fruit preserves and artisanal cured meats, made in keeping with local traditions and with respect for the environment. It is an ideal place for a tasty and educational stop, where visitors can discover how farming activities go hand in hand with protecting the local landscape.
A little further along the route is Il Pagliaio, a farmhouse and educational farm nestled in the peaceful countryside on the Monte Finocchio Pass between Sarsina and Ranchio. Here, adults and children can discover rural life through educational activities focused on animals, particularly donkeys, which play a central role in slow, mindful experiences. The farm offers workshops, donkey walks, creative play activities and tastings of organic products such as cheese, honey and jams, all surrounded by authentic natural beauty.
From Monte Finocchio Pass, the route descends towards Musella, in the municipality of Mercato Saraceno, where two places deeply connected to the spiritual traditions of the area can be found: Mount San Vicinio, with its small 18th-century chapel standing at the summit (610 m), and the Saint Vicinius Spring, a natural spring associated with the cult of Sarsina’s patron saint. The spring, a pilgrimage destination, is known for its refreshingly cold water flowing from the Middle Miocene marl-sandstone rock formation typical of Romagna. According to local tradition, the water is believed to have properties associated with fertility. In this area, the natural landscape intertwines with religious devotion: paths, woodlands and springs become stages along a journey connecting the cycle route with the history of the cult of Saint Vicinius. The area also preserves memories of more recent history: in 1944, it was the scene of fierce fighting between Allied troops and retreating German forces.
Not far away stands the picturesque Parish Church of Montesorbo, one of the most important and fascinating religious buildings in Romagna. Set in a landscape of remarkable beauty, the church retains the charm of ancient Romanesque architecture: a peaceful place of silence, soft light and views opening onto the surrounding countryside. It tells the story of centuries of religious and community life and is an ideal place for a contemplative stop along the route.
Before returning to Sarsina, the route passes through the village of Calbano, an ancient fortified medieval settlement perched on a hill overlooking Sarsina. The village retains an authentic and peaceful atmosphere, with narrow streets and stone houses. Here, visitors can book a visit to the workshop of a master luthier, where skilled woodworking techniques are used to create musical instruments according to traditional methods, combining craftsmanship and musical heritage. Calbano is also closely linked to the area’s cultural identity: near the village stands the Arena Plautina, an open-air theatre that hosts the Plautus Festival every summer, a prestigious theatre festival dedicated to the Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus, attracting audiences and performers from all over Italy.
The return to Sarsina completes an itinerary that brings together nature, farming traditions, spirituality and culture, offering a rich and engaging experience for the whole family. It is a simple yet meaningful way to discover the Romagna Apennines through their farms, landscapes and stories.
