Quarto Lake
Quarto is located approximately 8 km from Sarsina. Its name refers to its distance of four Roman miles from the town.
The village is home to Quarto Lake, which formed following a landslide on the slopes of Montalto in 1812. The lake has a distinctive L-shape, with its two arms corresponding to the waterways that meet here: the Savio and Para rivers.
The History of the Lake
A hydroelectric power station has been operating here since 1925. The lake is one of the most important reservoirs in the province and the second largest after Ridracoli.
Nature and Birdwatching
The area surrounding the lake is one of the most interesting wildlife habitats in the Savio Valley. The black pine forest overlooking the reservoir, growing on slopes still marked by the extensive landslide, is an important example of woodland restored through human reforestation efforts.
Quarto Lake is particularly popular among birdwatching enthusiasts. Mallards, common moorhens, kingfishers, grey herons and gulls are among the species regularly found along its shores.
It is an ideal place to observe wildlife and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Savio Valley.
