Sanctuary of La Verna
The Sanctuary of La Verna is one of the most important sites of Franciscan spirituality. Situated on a mountain summit at an altitude of 1,283 metres, its impressive buildings house numerous treasures of spirituality, art, culture and history.
The Chapel of the Stigmata
The Chapel of the Stigmata was built in 1263 on the site where Saint Francis received the stigmata. Above the altar stands the Crucifixion, a masterpiece by Andrea della Robbia.
The Museum of La Verna
The 15th-century rooms and the spaces where the saint once lived preserve valuable 15th-century illuminated manuscripts, liturgical vestments, paintings and other works of particular significance.
Among these are a polychrome wooden crucifix attributed to Montorsoli and a ceramic bust attributed to Andrea della Robbia. The visit concludes in the room dedicated to the historic pharmacy and apothecary workshop.
The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli
The Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is the oldest sacred building in the monastery complex. It was built by Saint Francis himself between 1216 and 1218 and enlarged between 1250 and 1260.
Inside are important works by Andrea della Robbia, including the Nativity and the Pietà, as well as the tomb of Count Orlando Catani, who donated Mount La Verna to Saint Francis.
The Main Basilica
The Main Basilica, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was commissioned by Count Angelo Tarlati and his wife Giovanna of Santa Fiora in Vallesanta and built between 1348 and 1509.
Inside, the blue-and-white glazed terracotta works by the Della Robbia family are particularly noteworthy, including the Annunciation and the Ascension.
Other highlights include the walnut choir stalls and the organ, featuring 4 keyboards, 90 stops and 5,500 pipes.
