Hermitage of Sant’Alberico

The Hermitage of Sant’Alberico is a place of silence and spirituality, situated at an altitude of over 1,134 metres. According to tradition, the hermitage was founded by Saint Romuald around the year 1000.

It is one of the few hermitages still in use today, inhabited and cared for by a single hermit.

A Place of Silence and Spirituality

The silence is perhaps the most striking and captivating feature of this place, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Apennines. The hermitage was completely rebuilt in 1965 by Father Quintino Sicuro, a priest whose beatification process is currently underway.

Wayside Shrines Along the Route

Special mention should be made of the maestà, small devotional shrines found along the road leading from Balze to Sant’Alberico. According to tradition, pilgrims place a stone at their base as a sign of devotion.

These shrines serve as a form of religious waymarking, helping travellers stay on the right path, both literally and symbolically.
