Sant’Agata Feltria and the Mariani Theatre

The Mariani Theatre overlooks Piazza Garibaldi, in the heart of Sant’Agata Feltria, and is considered the oldest theatre in Italy built entirely of wood. Having survived fires and deterioration, it still retains the charm of its historic structure.

A Theatre Built Entirely of Wood

In its original layout, the theatre consisted only of a stage and an auditorium. In 1723, construction began on the theatre boxes, each financed and therefore owned by the wealthiest families in the community.

One particularly unusual feature is the entrance to the auditorium, located to the side of the stage. The seating structure, supporting columns and stage are made entirely of chestnut wood.

Decorations and Interesting Facts

The balconies are finely decorated, while the auditorium ceiling features nine medallions depicting distinguished figures, including Uguccione della Faggiola and the musician Angelo Mariani.

The stage curtain depicts a view of Sant’Agata Feltria, painted by the 19th-century artist from Faenza, Romolo Liverani.

An interesting fact: in 1993, the Mariani Theatre was chosen as the filming location for a special RAI television programme dedicated to Dante’s Divine Comedy, featuring Vittorio Gassman.
