Montetiffi
Montetiffi is a medieval village, documented since the 11th century, that preserves a rich heritage of history, religion and traditional craftsmanship.
Montetiffi Abbey
The village once belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Montetiffi, dedicated to Saints Martin and Bartholomew. Restored and open to visitors, the abbey still stands in isolation on a rocky outcrop, overlooking the surrounding landscape.
It is considered one of the most important and best-preserved abbeys in Romagna. The sacristy and a niche in the presbytery contain remarkable 14th-century frescoes depicting Saint Leonard, the village’s patron saint, alongside Saint Benedict, Saint John the Baptist, Judith and Saint Scholastica.
The Ancient Craft of Terracotta Baking Pans
In addition to its characteristic medieval historic centre and abbey, Montetiffi preserves an ancient craft tradition: the production of terracotta baking pans used to cook traditional Romagna piadina flatbread.
For centuries, the secrets of this craft were passed down from father to son, providing a livelihood for entire families. Even today, visitors can explore an artisan workshop where the traditional raised-rimmed terracotta pans, known as “testi”, are still made according to the methods of generations of local craftsmen.
Tourists, school groups and curious visitors can arrange a visit by telephone to watch the different stages of production and discover how a traditional terracotta baking pan is made.
