Castel d’Alfero

Castel d’Alfero is a village of timeless charm, surrounded by sandstone quarries that remain one of the area’s most important economic activities.

The village, where time seems to have stood still since the 17th century, is a peaceful haven included by FAI (the Italian National Trust) on its list of places worth discovering and preserving.

A Village Frozen in Time

Today, Castel d’Alfero consists of just two streets. Within the village stands a small 19th-century church dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, whose name may recall an unusual snowfall outside the winter season.

Historical records from 1862 mention snowfall in August in Sarsina and in June in Cesenatico, events that caused extensive crop losses and severe hardship for the local population.

The Charm of the Surviving Gateway

Passing through the last remaining entrance gateway feels like stepping back in time. The silence, ancient architecture and peaceful atmosphere make Castel d’Alfero a particularly evocative place to discover along the route.
