The Village of Calbano
The Village of Calbano and the Plautine Arena in Sarsina
The village of Calbano overlooks the Plautine Arena, an amphitheatre reconstructed in Roman style in the 1990s, with a seating capacity of approximately 1,000 spectators.
Every year, from mid-July to mid-August, the Arena hosts the Plautus Festival, one of the longest-running classical theatre festivals.
Recently equipped with a modern roof, the Arena is set in a particularly scenic natural hollow, offering beautiful views of the surrounding ridgeline.
Calbano, the Ancient Stronghold of Sarsina
The village of Calbano represents the last remaining stronghold of the Roman town of Sarsina, which was once entirely surrounded by defensive walls.
The fortified walls that still enclose the village seem to have preserved not only its historic character but also a spirit, a way of life and a genuine, almost untamed identity, whose origins are rooted in the area’s ancient history.
This tradition is renewed every year on the feast day of Saint Anthony the Abbot, when the small 17th-century church dedicated to the saint, located within the fortified walls, comes to life once again.
