Parish Church of Montesorbo

The Parish Church of Santa Maria Annunziata is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture with a Greek-cross floor plan, unique in the area and recognised for its historical significance and beauty by the Italian heritage authorities.

Situated on a hill in Montesorbo, approximately 8 km from the centre of Mercato Saraceno, it is one of the area’s most important religious monuments and one of the most evocative places along the entire Saint Vicinius Way.

The Columns and the Collection of Stone Artefacts

The columns separating the aisles are made from distinctive cipollino marble imported from Greece. In the right aisle, visitors can still admire a collection of stone artefacts of considerable historical interest.

Among these, the most unusual depicts a hand, a face and a cross: probably an ancient sign intended for pilgrims, indicating a place of prayer and rest.
